Summer is on the way and anyone who loves boats can look forward to the usual line-up of boat festivals. If you enjoy real ale, painted canalware, live music, boats and bunting we hope to see you at a festival this year. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have about buying or selling a boat and will be sponsoring the Canalway Cavalcade and Rickmansworth Canal Festival. Last week a mother and her daughter (aged 10) died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Three people were on board the boat on Windermere and early enquiries suggested a faulty generator could have been to blame.

This was Tony Farrow’s boat, which was for sale with Boatshed Grand Union. It’s a 50ft cruiser stern narrowboat with wheelhouse and has an unusual and very attractive fit-out in cherry, chestnut and sycamore. Tony is a professional carpenter and refurbished the interior himself. He’s pictured here after painting the boat and blacking the hull. The boat is open plan with a separate bedroom cabin at the front.

Nobody knows the importance of having the right safety equipment onboard better than our own Directors, Neil and Mandy Chapman, they were rescued by the RNLI in the Bay of Biscay in October 1998 when their boat rolled 360 degrees, this was a life changing experience for Neil and Mandy who fortunately did have the correct safety equipment and who credit the event as being responsible for the creation of Boatshed.

The trading boats have now gathered at Mile End on the Regent’s Canal in London creating a most unusual market. Strangely reminiscent of Neil Gaiman’s floating market, (featured in the 1996 urban fantasy TV series Neverwhere,) it is a vibrant and colourful place. This is all part of the changes to London’s canals during the period of the Olympics.
